Catacombs!!

Catacombs is in the official Paris City Museum list, it was opened to public only from 2009. You know what?!!.. it holds 6-7 million human bones & skulls!!!

First things first!! It’s scary but adventurous!! Strictly not suggested for Kids, people with weak heart, respiratory problems and low mobility.

At any point of time only 200 visitors can enter, so you might have to wait in the queue for some time. While we were in the queue, got to see an artist making portrait using paper & cutter.. it was amazing…!

Once you enter the main gate you can buy your ticket. Full Entry Fee is 8€, you get an audio guide for additional 3€.
Your Scary Journey STARTS NOW.....

You need to take a narrow spiral stone stare case & descend 130 stairs below the ground level (20 meters/ equal to 5 story building!!). It’s like a Trans! You really would want to get down as fast as possible as you would have acquired a momentum but the stairs never ends!! Once you  reach the last step you got to walk for approximately 2 kilo meters, for the first 1.5 km it’s so dark, you see a dim lights here & there, path is quite muddy & stony with lot of twists & turns…the only sound you hear is water dripping down the walls. It’s quite cold as it’s maintained at constant 14C.

You enter the hall full of 6-7 million human skulls & bones arranged both sides of the wall in a very artistic way - heart shaped, barrel shaped, Cross shaped…ets. In sideways you get to see rusted locked gates which are not open for public. The skulls are of different shapes & sizes. Each skull has an history, Some skulls are neat, some have hole (by the bullet shoot!), some are a completely wounded (hard hit with a weapon!), my doctor hubby was explaining how that person would have died with what kind of injury. Good place for forensic Science Students!! After walking for some time you really become so silent & can hear your own breathing!

Once you reach the end, the real adventure starts!! You got to CLIMB UP 83 stairs to reach ground floor!! That’s super scary as your breathing speed increases; legs starts trembling, you would want the stairs to end as early as possible but oh gosh!! It never ends!!! We took around an hour to finish our trip.

Catacombs are listed in the “World’s top 10 scariest places to visit”. Memories of Catacomb will haunt you so sure!!

Thanks for Reading :)

The Love Lock Bridge in Paris

Pont neuf is the oldest bridge built across the Seine River during 1607, just near to this bridge & opposite to MO you see another bridge called “The Pont des Arts” or “The Love Lock Bridge”. Both sides of this bridge are filled with locks...locks...hell lot of Padlocks!! Locks of different design, colors, shape, with names, messages, lying there on the bridge as symbol of undying love! Can you believe the bridge holds overall locks weight of 500 to 700 kilograms!!!

Every year thousands of couples come here & write their names on the locks, lock it to the bridge & they throw the key in the Seine River with a belief that their love will never die!

Well it was interesting to witness a couple doing the Locking ceremony. Are you planning to lock one for your Love? well you can never do this as this year beginning parapet on the Pont des Arts had collapsed due to heavy weight of the Locks & Parisians are very serious about putting an end to this locking ritual...Here is the petition on "No Love Locks"

As the famous saying goes on...“If you really love, set it free. If it comes back it's yours; if it doesn't its never meant to be yours!”

Words per minute(WPM)!

Sometime back I was converting one of the podcast to text. All it needed was to plugin my ears to headphone, listen to the conversation & start writing it on a paper. Later to type it in Baraha (Kannada language software).

I decided to follow the below process steps:
1. Play the podcast , listen to a single line of conversation
2. Stop the player
3. Repeat the liner & write it on the paper

It was just around 16 mins podcast i thought i could do it in 30 mins, i started following the above 3 steps.... time went on and on and on....Well i was completely wrong on my 30 minutes estimate!

Then i realized i wasn't writing at the same speed as i was listening to! There was a gap in listening, repeating & writing, then came across this learning, that its measured in Number of Words per Minute (WPM) the count varies based on the below actions....

Listening  - 350 to 400 Words per minute
Reading   - 200 to 250 WPM
Speaking  -100 to 125 WPM
Writing     -  25 to   30 WPM

It was surprising to know this fact and as well to know that our educational system focuses heavily on Reading, Writing, Speaking but did we ever learn how to effectively listen?? even if we retrospect in our lives, every day scenarios, meetings, conversations.....everybody wants to speak, throw their ideas, share their views, experiences....but do we actually listen to others completely? or would we be in a hurry..waiting for our turn to throw our words....?!

Am sure you agree with me :)

Well my recent obsession was to learn & make a quilt for my little one :) Did some search on the net, followed few lessons, learnt stitching on Machine from my mom & at last this is what I made for my little daughter :)

Admission to Nursery : Do you know the “Point Based System”?

Well after reading the first part of the heading..am sure all your good..bad..sad experiences would have passed in front of your eyes at one glance like a film strip…if you were given a chance..you would never ever miss even a single opportunity to share your experiences & a bit of Gyaan for the future parents to be :) ..am sure you will agree with me for having any or all of these experiences…
- Doing all the base work like which schools are good, confusion about CBSC or ICSC...when do they give form..what time..school visiting..etc
- Fighting with your manager to get a leave for this imp day to go to School...
- Missing your key meetings at office...& standing in Queue for hours to get the form
- Exactly when your turn came the counter was closed & you were asked to come tomorrow, On the next day you were told that the forms are over! so was your leaves at office! :(
- You were lucky..you got the form, filled it & submitted it but didn’t get a seat :(
- You were super lucky…you got a seat but the Fee was so heavy…You would tell at least 10 people that your entire education was completed with less than the amount what you are paying for your kid's one year nursery :)

As you know every year b/t Sept to Dec most of the schools issues application forms for nursery admission…parents apply at 3-4 schools..hoping at least in one school it will click!..by Dec - Jan end results would be out….if your kid has made it to the school…WoW! Congratulations! It’s a Happy Beginning…if not…its a scary situation for parents as they would undergo the above said experience cycle one/more time! :)

Well we had applied for a nursery seat in our neighborhood school for our daughter. Results were out yesterday, guess what?! she got a seat :) we had been to school for collecting additional forms & kit..etc..while we were in queue waiting for our turn to come,  a person was completely upset as his kid didn’t get a seat, he was expressing his angst so politely with the School Admission person…few words from their conversation like “Ganguly Commission Report…point based system” caught our attention. Also it was displayed on the notice board…

Inquest to know about it lead me to write this article..

Ganguly Commission came out with a Recommendation Report in 2006-2007 to fine tune the Nursery Admission process in Private Schools with it’s a point based system. Few salient features are:

School should not be conducting any interview/tests or any kind of interactions (formally or informally) with the kids for the admission.

School should have an uniform & transparent admission process with standardized registration form & scheduled timelines

They should use 1 to 100 point scale system with weightages given to different eligibility criterion like Neighborhood, Education Qualifications of parents, Sibling studying in the same school, if parent/s is Alumni, Physically challenged Children, Girl Child & some points are reserved for School Specific parameters.
Let’s look at what points are given for each component:

While it’s a systematic approach for a fact based selection process…still there seems to be a lot of critics about the criteria & weightages. If you are interested google it to read further.
After knowing this point based system..the next question is.. what are the different admission processes & systems are being used in other countries for the nursery admission…
Hope this article was informative :) feel free to leave your comments/experiences relating to this topic.
